Archery Compound Bows
Compound bows??? or...............
I'm a beginner and I love archery! I want to buy a bow, but i don't know what kind to chose, I love the look of the recurved bow (is traditional) but I don't know.......I have read that compound bows are good, but I'm lost in this one!!!!!!!
So my question is that what kind of bow you guys would recommend?? Recurved or Compound??? Remember I'm a beginner!

I always like to start my students with recurves. It will help you to learn good solid form from the start. I also use very light bows at the beginning. It all has to do with what you want to do in archery, do you want to hunt, or do you want to compete? For hunting, unless you're into tradition, I'd go with compound. Compounds give you a quick start, you can do a lot of things wrong with a compound and still hit the mark. You can also put the Compound Bow down for most of the off season and pick it up again a few weeks before hunting season start and get back up to speed within minutes. You can't do that with a recurve, with recurves you have to train year round if you want to maintain your skills.
Compounds also allow you to start at a higher draw weight with no ill effects, this is advantageous for hunting, as there is usually a minimum draw weight you have to meet to hunt. With recurves, if you force it you will develop a lot of bad habits very quickly, worse case scenario you can injure yourself if you force yourself to pull too much too soon.
Now for competition, if say you want to go to the Olympics one day, then you have no choice but to go recurve.
The good thing about starting with recurves is that you can go either way later on. You can go traditional or go to the opposite end and shoot compounds, while retaining a good 80% of what you learned with recurves. The same is not true the other way around. Most people who start with compounds have to start from scratch when they need to learn the recurve. Now there are exceptions to the rule of course, like Brady Ellison, currently shooting in Beijing was a compound shooter since the beginning and just made the switch 3 years ago to recurve. But the difference is he had good solid form since the beginning.
Here's my advice, try to find a range. If you're in the US, go to www.usarchery.org, and do a Directory Search. Most ranges in the US offer free intro class, some, like ours, will let you use their equipment free of charge.
