Archery Quiver
Anyone know anything about mounted archery as it was practiced in the medieval period?
I am interested particularly in Turkish mounted archery in the late 11th to early 12th centuries. Rate of firing arrows? Where were the arrows stored immediately prior to firing (taken from quiver, tucked into a sash, several in hand, etc.) ? Did they use long reins held loosely in hand? Did they ride w/out reins, controlling the horse using toes/feet/knees? Any scholarly references available? Any pictures on the Internet I could look at? (Not interested in computer game screenshots/pics, but recreations, drawings, modern archers okay.)
Turks were Mongols also, that is a steppe tribe native to central Asia originally at home in the steppe grasslands, nomadic, and with a horse-based culture.
The horse was a key element, and riders had distinct saddles and short stirrups to allow the archer to stand in his stirrups to shoot. The horse was well trained to obey leg commands, freeing the rider's hands. Often two bows were carried of different styles, both recurve, each in a leather sheath. Each bow would have its own leather quiver of arrows.and they used different styles of arrows as well. Bow could be strung on horseback.
In battle, archers held several arrows in the hand holding the bow to allow rapid fire. How many arrows and at what rate, I don't know. After battles great efforts went into retrieving shot arrows, due to the care and effort of making arrows. Research suggests that maximum effective range for hitting a specific target from horse back was about 80 yards, though the bows had ranges up to 300-350 yards, greater than a Long Bow's range. With angle shooting, the range was increased, and by shooting in coordination, large flights of arrows were released into massed targets with great effectiveness. They also used signal arrows, with whistling sounds, to direct attacks and select formations.
