What's Archery Got to the high Jewish holidays Do?
Did you know that the word for sin in Hebrew chet - - is from the archer? Then the word Torah, which refers to the Old Testament scrolls and the text they contain.
When on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, Jews all over the world recite over and over again in the holiday liturgy the words "Al Chet," commonly referred to as "sin" translates what they really say, "missed the mark." Hebrew has no real word for sin. There are one or two other words that what we think of as Sin known, but none that actually mean "sin" per se
The word Torah means to aim. The Torah teaches us to aim. And sometimes take we miss and goal.
Why do we Jews use archery terminology for such important words? After all the sins not taken off the hook be, the Torah is the sacred text of Judaism. Perhaps the reason lies in the analogy made between an archer and a person repentance for past injustice can be. Archery involves setting goals in the middle are the portholes in which the archer aims his arrows. To access the "Mark", an archer must practice her aim until it is good enough to not only meet the goal, but the Bulls Eye. On Yom Kippur, Jews look to see the last 12 months of her life, which Goals they set for themselves, as practiced that goal and meet, if their aim was true. You look to see the target, if they succeeded in the direct hit. During this period of introspection they notice not only when they and their arrows Aimed Shot, but if they even got close to their marks. If not, the time between Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, Yom Kippur, and offers a time to consider new targets - or or study old targets and to commit to practice their aim. There is also a time with the intention - up Kavanah (another word that is not true in connection with Archer, also means "to aim") - to exert more to shoot true - Hit the Bulls Eye this year.
What is the bull's eye? Judaism has 613 mitzvot (commandments) and, while law-abiding Jews, they try to take all Most Jews do not. All those mitzvot are to help us to sharpen our goal. Torah teaches us how you want in a fair manner and in a spiritual way. And each Time we aim and shoot, every time we try, the goal of adding a mitzvah (singular of mitzvot) taken, we remember God. We in the direction of God. If we hit or even come close, we really connect with God. That's what Torah and mitzvot are all about.
No wonder that in this time of year we speak in archery terms. Al Chet ... I missed the brands last year. Torah ... the goal on the goal, I want this year.
