archery: homemade target?
i don't want to go out and buy a professional target
its for my homemade hazel longbow.
any ideas of how i can make one?
First, make sure you have a good backstop, large enough to stop even the wildest shots. Stacked hay bales can work for that, or sandbags.
One cheap way to make a target to put in front of the backstop is to stuff a burlap gunny sack with plastic grocery bags. You'll be amazed how many bags it can take to fill one, but if you ask friends and neighbors, you'll probably find someone who has been saving them for years and is glad to find a use for them.
For gunny sacks, try a farm supply store, or a farmer who might have used seed sacks. If you can't find sacks, you can buy burlap cheaply at a fabric store. Choose a loose weave, so that the point of the arrow can open a big enough space for the shaft without breaking the fibers. You can make a sack by folding it once and stitching the two sides with twine threaded through a yarn-size needle. Paint your target onto the burlap (spray paint is quick and easy, for a traditional bullseye), then stuff with plastic bags. After stuffing, stitch the top, too.
Keep in mind that a burlap target is best for target points or field points. For judo points or broadheads, you will want a different type of target. The professionally made targets are made from self-healing foam, but if you want something homemade, use wooden planks to make a 3-sided box, about 4 feet on a side. Pour several sacks of sand (like you'd use in children's sandbox) into the box, and rake it up as a ramp with the low end at the open side of the box and the high end close to the top of the back wall. Stake a paper target onto the ramp. The arrows will pull right out of the sand, even with broadheads. You'll go through a lot of paper targets, but they're cheap.
