Can cello play with underhand grip? ?
I want to learn how to play cello in Baroque way. I am thinking of getting Baroque bow. but someone told me there is a way to hold a bow with underhand grip like a double bass.(for cello) I don't know how it works because everyone holds a bow overhanded...any thoughts?
P.S. this baroque style PERNAMBUCO Bow Only weights 50g and is it OK for cello? too light maybe?
The cello bow has NEVER had an 'underhand' grip - you have been misinformed. The double bass is the only member of the modern violin family (and the double bass is something of a hybrid between the violins and viols) to use this grip (the 'German' style of bowing). Your friend might have seen someone playing a viola da gamba. This instrument looks superficially very much like a cello when being played and, like all viols, has an underhand bowing technique.
