Will dry firing a compound bow once cause damage?
i have a bear lights out that i just got. Ive been shooting arrows in the backyard and what not. i cam inside and practiced drawing and letting it back slowly, and it got away from me once and dry fired. there was a big thwack as the string hit the stopper thing. i just checked everything and it seems fine. o and before this ive been finger firing and the string below the trigger loop came unwound. and sometimes when i fired, the string would go off to the right of the stopper a lot..all before i dry fired a few minutes ago
i understand not to do it. i already knew. thats why i asked if it will mess up if it only happened once...
I have a Bear Lights Out that was dry fired once and turned out OK, but dry firing in general is extremely dangerous. Think... the arrow absorbs energy and hits with the force of a swift hammer blow. With no arrow, that energy doesn't just disappear... it gets absorbed by the limbs of the bow. Many times they splinter and send shards of fiberglass into your eyeballs. I think mine was saved by the string stopper. Yours probably did the same. An easy way to check for hairline cracks in your limbs is by taking a Q-tip and lightly rubbing it in long strokes against them. The fibers will catch on any cracks if there are some.
Was out shooting when a friend wanted to try. The douche didn't seat the arrow properly and the arrow just fell out. Instead of drawing down, he just released it. Rule of thumb... only draw your bow with a full fist or when you're at the range. 2nd rule, never let anyone else try your bow.
