how do you shoot a longbow?

i just made a longbow out of a stave, backing and riser(all hickory) and some other stuff. i finished tillering it and it's 28 draw, and #45. please tell me how to shoot and hold it. i see people hold it tilted higher than the taget even if they are a few yards away, why?

ps if it helps, im right handed, thanks alot

First, you need to find which of your eye is dominant. Even when you're right handed, you might be left eye dominant and you'd be better off shooting left handed.

To do this, stand up straight, look straight forward. Let your arms relax and straight, both hands in front of your waist, open up your hands, palms pointing straight down, thumbs pointing to the sides such that the index fingers and the thumbs forms "L" shapes. Now, Lay one palm on top of the back of your other hand, make a small diamond shaped hole between the hands. Now, look up and acquire a target far away, both eyes open, raise your arms up. Center that target in that small hole, and bring your hands to your face, while keeping that target centered. The eye it comes back to is your dominant eye. So right eye dominant, Right Handed Bow. That is the bow is drawn with the right hand and held in your left.

How far you hold your bow up depends on your arrow's trajectory, and that depends on many things, arrow weight, the bow's poundage, your release, etc. So you will need to learn that by shooting the bow. There are two ways of aiming, one is instinctive aiming and the other is point of aim method. When you use point of aim, some people combine it with stringwalking. I'll explain those in a sec. Instinctive shooting is easier to explain but harder to learn. Instinctive shooting works much like how one would shoot a basketball. You just look at the target and you rely on muscle memory to place where your body should be.

Here comes point of aim, point of aim is simply using the tip of your arrow and pointing it at the target. Now, for most people shooting a bow of that poundage, with a low anchor pointing the tip of the arrow at the target at full draw will land the arrow about 80 yards away. And here's where the stringwalking comes in. To shoot at a target closer, a stringwalker would walk his drawing hand down on the string, such that his draw finger is now a distance away from the nock of the arrow. Top barebow shooters who use this technique sometimes file their finger nails to make it easier to count the number of strands he move down everytime.

Archery is all about consistency. Everything about your form need to be the same for each shot. While there is no such thing as one form for everyone, certain basic steps are the same. The one that we teach to everyone is the nine step to the ten ring. There are 9 basic steps

1. Stance. It all starts here, feet position must be the same shot after shot. For starter, feet should be parallel to each other, shoulder width apart. Imagine a line running in front of your toes straight to the middle of the target.

2. Nock, place the arrow on the string, index feather pointing away from the bow.

3. Grip and string hand, place your bow hand on the grip, take your draw fingers and make a hook with the index, middle and ring fingers. Tuck the pinky under the thumb. Place the hook on the string. Some people prefer to put all three fingers under the arrow, you need to do this if you're stringwalking. Others place the arrow between the index and middle finger.

4. Pre Draw, look at the target chin up, this is very important. By looking at the target you're fixing your head relative to the target. Once you've locked your eyes on the target, don't move your head. This is the first part of the anchor. Raise the bow up.

5. Draw, pull the string back with one fluid motion to...

6. Anchor, this varies from person to person. Anchoring is the act of fixing the back end of the arrow to your head. The most solid anchor is with the string in the middle of your chin and the bone of your index finger snuggly under your jaw bone. This anchor however, doesn't work too well if you're doing instinctive aiming. The nock of the arrow will end up too far from your eye. So most instinctive archers find a different anchor point. One guy I know touch the tip of his index finger to a spot on his cheek bone. Others pick other spots as long as it is solid and repeatable.

7. Aim, this part was explained above

8. Release, relax the hook and let the string push your fingers away. The muscles controlling the hook runs up the inside of your forearm.

9. Follow Through, keep your bow arm up, let the drawing hand move back naturally.

Hope that helps
