I have a PSE NOVA 28" draw 55 lb ?
what type of spine do i need on my arrows and how do i determine what kind of broad head to get? any other advice and sugestions for a first time deer hunter let me know
In my humble opinion, cough cough, actually, in my fat headed opinion, I suggest you go to carbon arrows instead of aluminum. The arrows last much longer, take much more of a beating, and cost pretty much the same. In the begining the carbons would shatter, but no more, I've killed 7 deer with the same arrow. If you go to any bow shop (not k-mart or that type of store) but any real outdoor shop, they will tell you what size, and they may even allow you to test fire a few sizes.
Now when you ask what broadhead, you are asking the same as "what is your favorite color?" There are so many broadheads on the market, and they will all kill a deer, so I give you this advise. Go for a cut on impact broadhead, that is one that's blades go all the way to the tip and back. Enter "Magnus Stinger" into your search engine. It is an example of the type I recomend to start with. They are very similar to the old Bear Broadhead that killed so many animals. I would suggest that while you are trying out your arrows, try two different weight points, and broadheads, 100 gr and 125 gr. I have always been happy with the 100 gr but you may like the 125 better, Don't spend too much on your broad heads and don't try the mechanical (open on impact) ones until you are shooting a heavier bow. Even when shooting new broadheads, sharpen them yourself, and keep them sharp. They harvest deeer by cutting arteries and causing blood loss, not by impact or infection (joking). When you get the right arrows and broadheads, and go to practice, with each shot, use the same anchor point, the same release, and don't move until after the arrow hits the target. (many people drop their bow arm to see the arrow fly and that causes misses) With each shot, picture a deer standing broadside, take a relaxation breath, and don't move after you release until the arrow hits home.

When you do get out there and hunt, hold still, deer see movement very well. ANY DEER YOU HARVEST with a bow is a trophy. Pick a spot and aim. After you shoot a deer with a bow, wait at least 20 minutes, then go slow. Carry a little spray bottle of peroxide and when you see what you think is blood, spray it. if it is blood it will foam up, and then after you do find the deer and dress it, clean your hands and knife with the peroxide too. Read everything you can on deer hunting.
