What kind of bow shoots farthest?

I'm taking part in an engineering competition in which we need to figure out how to get the most distance out of a bow design.

Here are the rules for the competition.

1. The entire bow MUST be made of steel with the exception of the bowstring.
2. The bow will be placed in a mechanism which will pull the bowstring to exactly 80 lbs of force and released.
3. Provide your own arrows, which can be made of any material.
4. The arrow which flies the farthest wins. Accuracy doesn't matter.

That's it.

I've been reading up a ton about the different constructions of bows and have concluded that the best thing to go with would be a Compound Bow. What suggestions would you have as far as construction for this bow? There's so much information out there I have no clue how to start (single cam, dual cam, hybrid cam, etc.). Also, what about arrows?

In flight archery, if you look at the records, the dedicated recurve flight bow actually beats the compound record for distance. Dedicated flight bows are usually very short recurve bows, with overdraw. An overdraw allows you to shoot a very short arrow for a long drawlength. This achieves two things. The shorter the arrow the stiffer it will behave. Thus allowing you to shoot a weaker spined(lighter) arrow on a heavier bow. Shorter also means less mass because well it's short.

There are better material to use on limbs other than steel though. Steel is strong, this is true but it's not very light. A lot of the energy is lost just trying to move the limbs and not enough will be transferred to the arrow. Carbon is the material of choice when making these limbs, stiff and light.

For arrows, you'd also want carbon shafts, with tiny vanes, stainless steel points. The main thing is for the arrow dynamic spine to be matched to the bow's poundage(80lbs) and the length of the arrow. When the spine of the arrow is not matched to the bow weight, the arrow will spend too much of its energy flopping around in the air trying to straighten out. This requires trial and error, there are arrow charts out there but I don't think the charts will cover the sizes of arrows you're looking for(short arrows with heavy poundage). Most arrow charts are made to accomodate normal use, with short arrows normally being used by small statured person(kids) hence lower poundage bow.

First, once you've made the bow, measure the shaft length that you need. Then find an arrow chart, and look at what it will give you at 80lbs. Then, let's say it has a shaft for 28" at 80lbs and it recommends a size 400, and you measure that you need a 23" arrow. For every inch, in this case you need to shave off 5", you go up one size, so if it says a 400 for 28", for 27" you go up to a 470, then 520 for 26" and so on. A shaft like the Carbon Tech McKinney II might be good but quite expensive at $270 per dozen. Shoot the shaft out of the bow, without fletching, watch how it flies. Keep cutting back a tiny bit at a time on the shaft until it flies straight. Good luck and have fun.
