Traditional Arrow Making?
I want to start traditional archery, Im getting the Fred Bear Montana Longbow 45#. Is it cheaper to make your own arrows? If so what materials would I need? Whats the difference between 11/32 and 5/16 arrows? I want wood arrows. Please help Nate
So, the easiest way to get started is to just buy the shafts. Port Orford Cedar polished and turned is the standard for this sort of thing. Then you are going to need a fletching jig (get a tri - feather if you are going to do alot of arrows it is 3 x faster) a taper tool (looks like a double manual pencil sharpener) some fletching and point glue and you are good to go. If you want to get crazy, get a cresting tool. 11/32 vs. 5/16 is the shaft diameter, thicker shafts are for heavier bows. What's more important will be the spine weight of the arrow. This depends on your draw length as well. So, wherever you go to get the stuff you can talk to someone there. Or if you can't get that information, generally heavier won't hurt you unless you are grossly overspined in which case the arrow will fly a bit wobbly.
You can make shafts yourself, but that is a major pain and the premade ones are straighter and more consistent than you are likely to get. If you want to get crazy - get a cresting tool so you can mark the arrows with your unique crest.
